Share characteristics of widespread poverty, high rates of population growth, illiteracy, disease, and often unstable governments.  While high concentrations of people living in rural areas and urban shantytowns are overwhelmingly impoverished, ruling elites of most developing world countries are wealthy.

So far, corrective eyewear has been distributed to extremely few of the estimated 600 million impoverished vision impaired people who not only can’t see well, but have little or no access to eye care or eyeglasses.
